Drug Dorks of Germany

‘How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)’ on Netflix

When I first saw the title ‘How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast)’, I thought it was going to be another boring Netflix documentary about drugs. The show couldn’t be anything further from a boring documentary. The show is based on the lives of real German teenagers who get extremely lucky and use their high intellects to create an international Internet drug empire. It’s like Breaking Bad, but for dorks.

Now these aren’t your usual German teenagers that you’d expect to sell drugs. They’re the polar opposite. Moritz and Lenny are two very nerdy German teenagers, they sit around all day playing video games or writing code. One week, when people are particularly cruel to Moritz, he gets fed up with it. He purchases a lot of ecstasy and starts selling it online on an encrypted website.

How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast) shows more than just the story of how these teens started selling ecstasy, but also explains why. It shows every aspect of both the characters’ personal lives, so you really get to feel for them. Whether it be an absent mother or a permanent disability, numerous factors lead both the characters to the decisions they have to make.

This show goes with all of the other mini-series Netflix has been releasing recently. It’s the perfect length, spanning only six 30-minute episodes. When the show ended, I was a little bit surprised. I rarely find myself finishing shows wanting more, but I legitimately wanted a second season, because the characters are compelling and you want to see how their lives are going to turn out.

I generally don’t watch TV in foreign languages, so it was a little bit of a challenge at first to get into a show that was almost entirely in German. But that just made it feel authentic. At a certain point, I became so accustomed to reading the subtitles that I did it without thinking. So don’t let the subtitles turn you off of the show. The entire show is the length of two episodes of Game of Thrones. With a three-hour total runtime, it won’t waste weeks of your life with some crazy binge watch.

How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast), touches on more than just teenagers selling unfathomable amounts of drugs on the internet. It shows that the internet provides you with the ability to be someone else. Whether that person is the true you is entirely up to the individual. On the surface, Moritz and Lenny are two normal teens living in a town in Germany. If anyone could see their dark-web activity, they would know what was actually going on.

Overall this is one of my favorite new shows I’ve seen in awhile. The creators based the show on a true story, but the real story is much different. Just one 18 year old, who goes by the name of Maximilian S., ran an entire drug empire from his bedroom. He was able to sell drugs all over the world with nothing more than a few mailboxes and his computer at home. After getting caught by German authorities with hundreds of kilos of a wide assortment of drugs, they sentenced him to only seven years. He would have gotten 70 years or life in the United States.

    Hey Elijah,

I’ve never been much into foreign shows either (i.e. subtitles) but I stumbled across a couple really good ones on Netflix recently – “How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)” being one of them. Honestly, it feels like they are better and more compelling that the US shows right now. You should definitely check out “Black Spot”, it’s got a really cool creepy, noir vibe with some quirky characters and just a hint of the supernatural. I think you would enjoy it.
