OpenAI Projects Cannes 2026 For First Animated Feature Release

‘Critterz’ might be made in under a third of the time and a fraction of the cost

The Wall Street Journal has reported that OpenAI plans to turn the 2023 short Critterz into an AI-generated feature film for the Cannes film festival in 2026. It is reportedly being made in just nine months, rather than about 3 years, and, with a budget of less than $30 million, which is a fraction of the cost of a human-generated animated feature. Along with partners Native Foreign and Vertigo Films, OpenAI is trying to sell the proposition of AI-produced mainstream animation that Stephen Macaulay wrote about for Book and Film Globe just last week.
